Paleontological Evidence for Dinoflagellates and Ciliates as Early Eukaryotes

چکیده

Molecular trees and geochemical markers suggest the divergence of dinoflagellates as early eukaryotes (~650 million years ago), but traditional fossil record cysts (dinocysts) starts during Triassic (~230 ago). A re-evaluation pre-Triassic shows that many acritarchs (microfossils uncertain affinities) are dinocysts representing “missing” evidence. Traditional diagnostic criteria for dinocysts, based on morphologic comparisons with motile stages, biased towards thecate species. The approach proposed here, more natural comparison living cysts, includes athecate Many species would be “acritarchs” if found fossils, earlier accepted dinoflagellate living. earliest represent an innovation profound implications evolution: a cell wall sporopollenin-like material enabling survival from microbial attack, in then microbial-dominated world. Related most likely evolved protection crucial stages sexual reproduction (e.g., ciliates dinoflagellates, spores pollen algae plants). Ciliates may have response to extreme climatic conditions Cryogenian, where robust resting cyst advantageous. Thecate forms, possibly predatory pressure.

Distribution and Evolution of Peroxisomes in Alveolates (Apicomplexa, Dinoflagellates, Ciliates)

The peroxisome was the last organelle to be discovered and five decades later it is still the Cinderella of eukaryotic compartments. Peroxisomes have a crucial role in the detoxification of reactive oxygen species, the beta-oxidation of fatty acids, and the biosynthesis of etherphospholipids, and they are assumed to be present in virtually all aerobic eukaryotes. Apicomplexan parasites includin...

Secretive ciliates and putative asexuality in microbial eukaryotes.

Facultative sexuality is assumed to have occurred in the ancestor of all extant eukaryotes, but the distribution and maintenance of sex among microbial eukaryotes is still under debate. In this paper, we address the purported asexuality in colpodean ciliates as an exemplary lineage. Colpodeans are a primarily terrestrial clade thought to have arisen up to 900 MYA and contain one known derived s...

Using in situ flow cytometry images of ciliates and dinoflagellates for aquatic system monitoring.

Short-period variability in plankton communities is poorly documented, especially for variations occurring in specific groups in the assemblage because traditional analysis is laborious and time-consuming. Moreover, it does not allow the high sampling frequency required for decision making. To overcome this limitation, we tested the submersible CytoSub flow cytometer. This device was anchored a...

Mixotrophic Protists among Marine Ciliates and Dinoflagellates: Distribution, Physiology and Ecology

The ciliate Mesodinium pulex (Class Litostomatea) ingested all 5 species of cryptophytes and the autotrophic dinoflagellate Heterocapsa rotundata offered as prey. Despite this, it could only grow on the cryptophytes Teleaulax sp. and Guinardia theta and the dinoflagellate H. rotundata, because ingestion rates of the other prey cells, even at very high prey concentrations, were too low to suppor...
